It's official already over a month, five countries are candidates to receive a World Expo in 2020 : Ayutthaya, Thailand, Dubai, United Arab Emirates, Ekaterinburg, Russia, Izmir, Turkey and Sao Paulo, Brazil .

The Third Gentlemen's Agreement meeting was held on November 14, 2011 in the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE) in Paris.

More than 30 representatives from candidates for Expo 2017 and Expo 2020 attended the meeting and discussed the guideline for their candidature campaigns and the preparation on the upcoming 150th General Assembly on November 22 and 23.

The Gentlemen's Agreement meeting aims to establish a friendly cooperation among candidates and to provide a chance for transparent discussions between candidates and the BIE.

The meetings are organized by the Secretariat General at regular intervals during the candidature period for a Registered Expo (World Expo) and a Recognized Expo (International Expo) to discuss practical issues related to candidature campaigns and to reach agreement on them.

Until now, the BIE has received the candidatures from Astana of Kazakhstan, Liege of Belgium for hosting the International Expo in 2017.

And five cities -- Izmir of Turkey, Ayutthaya of Thailand, Sao Paulo of Brazil, Yekaterinburg of Russia and Dubai of United Arab Emirates, are in competition for hosting World Expo 2020.

The submission of candidatures for Expo 2020 has already closed on November 2 while the deadline for Expo 2017 candidature will be December 10, 2011.

The Expo’s motto – “Rostov Region: live playfully!”. The main idea of the motto is that urban problems can be solved through a game, in an easy and interesting way; in modern cities, one can also live easily, comfortably and joyfully.

The concept of Rostov Region Expo is built around the realization of global Expo-2010 motto (“The better city – the better life”) and the Russian pavilion’s motto (“The city nice for children – the best one!”). These scopes set the theme of transformation of urban environment, presentation of future artifacts, and dreams about a perfect city. Usual objects of urban environment should appear at the Expo as new, unconventional and futuristic, attractive first of all for children.

The Rostov Region tried to see topical problems, challenges of modern megalopolises through the eyes of children.

Children’s favorite pastime is game, and everything is possible there. In the game process, usual objects transform, come alive, ideas and dreams come true in different, even boldest forms. Adult rules, such as “this is impossible”, “this is unreal”, “you shouldn’t do like that” don’t work here.

Using game concept to modernize facades of traditional dwelling and to create the “perfect” city (only within the expo framework at the moment), Rostov Region actually proposes solutions to strictly utilitarian and urban problems.

Faceless typical housing is a burning problem not only for Don Municipalities, but also for many other cities of Russia and the world, which have been constructing houses by standard designs for decades in the twentieth century to provide people with individual habitation as fast and cheap as possible.

The game with the visitors starts right with their first steps at the Rostov Region Expo. Weber Shandwick to promote Ekaterinburg for EXPO 2020

First discovery of 1889 Expo – Part 2

We're able to get to know the Expo of 1889 in the first article a few days ago. Now, we propose to enter a little more in detail with the description of the different areas of the Expo, before returning to the Russian pavilions in an upcoming article.

The 1889 exhibition is divided into four parts:
A - The Esplanade des Invalides,
B - The edges of the Seine, banks and docks,
C - The Champ de Mars,
D - The Trocadero, its park and palace.

A – The Esplanade des Invalides

Entering through the door that faces the Hotel des Invalides, down the main street covered with a long tent, we meet the Panorama of the Paris includes 800 portraits made by only one artist, a cottage of the School model, an example of rustic building, a village of Dutch East Indies where we see the Javanese dancing girls with costumes of bright colors.

United States might abandon the Expo 2020 in favor of the UAE

Expo'67 Montreal... USSR pavilion announced ! - Part 1

We are in 1963, already, some announcements about the next Expo'67 are made. The Canadian Corporation for the 1967 World Exhibition edits some pamphlets to present what will be this event.

Of course, is presented the site where will be the expo, and also a few pavilions, as the thematics, canadian pavilion and some foreign ones, United State, France, Britain, Astralia, etc. and the USSR pavilion for sure.

For these main pavilions, their designs are almost totally reflect of the future reality, as you can see below.

Now, we propose you to discover the USSR pavilion with the same manner that at the time before construction.

A curved rectangular roof, supported on two V-shaped beams, soars over the pavilion to a height of 138 feet. Four glass curtain walls, suspended from the roof, enclose the two-storey building. The interior of the pavilion is dominated at front centre by a spherical space planetarium. Exhibits are on the upper level and two mezzanines as well as the ground level which also houses a cinema, restaurant and bar.

Municipal budget organization "The capital of the Urals" conducted a public opinion survey designed to determine the ratio of citizens to run for the World Universal Exhibition "Expo-2020» (Expo-2020) in Ekaterinburg.

Amur Basin Lands show a surprising contrast: in the north - a mountain relief and the fast torrents, severe and cold climate, Taiga cryogenic soils, prevalence of flora and fauna of Taiga woods; in the south - flat relief and softer climate - cold winter, but warm and even hot summer, the abundant rivers with smooth flow, fertile soils, so-called "the Amur black soils", prevalence of flora and fauna of forest-steppe areas.

Two-third of the Amur region territory is covered by woods. The products of woods are exported mainly to the Peoples Republic of China and other Asia Pacific Region countries. The priority of the large Amur forest industry enterprises is introduction in the territories of the region of capacities on full and disposable processing of woods. Such rational use of natural gifts hides a great potential of the region ecology preservation.

The Amur region occupies over 53 % of arable lands in Far East federal district. The area has reserves for expansion of cultural areas for more than by 500 thousand hectares. The Amur region was and remains the basic manufacturer of soya in the country. Its relative density in the all-Russian volume of total manufacture makes to 40 %, in the Far East region to 60 %.

The main branches of agriculture are farming, and meat and dairy animal breeding, besides, within the Region territory pig breeding and poultry farming are developed on high level. In the northern part of the region reindeer breeding, fur farming and fur trade are vastly spread.

The air of Amur basin region is all about strategically important space systems development. Within the territory of the Amur, region you can find unique facilities, cosmodromes, where launching of rockets to the space is performed and will be performed.

In 2011, works on construction of support infrastructure of "Vostochny"cosmodrome, and in 2012 - works on creation of a land infrastructure will be performed.

The Far East national space center prepares and launches multipurpose space vehicles, cargo spacecrafts and space station modules, conducts man-controlled space flights programs and advanced space programs on studying and development of heavenly bodies, development of space technologies and space device engineering, and it is also engaged in the international cooperation with China, Japan, South Korea.

The rivers are the arteries of Amur basin region giving vital energy not only to the whole Far East, but also to neighboring countries. Implementation of the project of large-scale electric power export to the Peoples Republic of China will have positive impact on social and economic development of the Amur region. Export of power from Russia to China is possible thanks to a unique geographical position and natural potential of the Amur region. The volume of the supplied electric power after the project go-live should make more than 60 billion kW-hours a year at full capacity.

Amur basin region fire is represented by mineral resources which "light up" the region industry, being its raw-material base, "warm up" the whole economy of Amur basin region, providing its stable growth.

Potential deposits of mineral raw materials are estimated in 400 billion dollars. The basis of the mining industry is mining of gold, coal, and building materials. The region is rich with deposits of iron and titanic ores, nonferrous metals, aluminosilicate raw materials, zeolites, China clay, and so on.

Initially the main heater of the region industry was gold. Many recesses of far Siberia and the Far East have revived thanks to thick and fast developing of gold mining. According to the results of 2009, the Amur region occupied the third place in the Russian Federation in gold mining with 21.9 tons that is 17 % more than in 2008. Mining of alluvial and ore gold is performed in the region. The Amur region possesses great geological resources of vein gold.

Within the region territory it is possible to find such unique mineral resources as mineral and thermomineral waters, non-traditional types of raw materials for production of alumina, amorphous and crystal silica.

Man is the natural 'fifth force', or 'fifth element' who directs energy of the earth, air, water and fire to a constructive stream. The people acclimated and occupying the region territories do their best to live in harmony with these forces. More than half of the area population is engaged in various kinds of economic activities.

Development of human potential is always in the spotlight of regional authorities. Recently, it has been possible to note positive trends in demographics. Birth rate increases, death rate of the population and natural decline go down.

Among researchers, ethnographers, and pathfinders, exploring Amur basin region at different times, are such names as N. N. Muravyev-Amursky (the governor general of Eastern Siberia), G. S. Novikov-Daursky (a researcher of Amur basin region and an ethnographer), V. D. Poyarkov (a pathfinder, expanded Russian territories in the Far East) and E. P. Khabarov (a pathfinder, collected data about the Lena river and its inflows, on the people living here, on minerals).

Building of the Trans-Siberian railway was a new step in resettlement to Siberia and to the Far East. In connection with construction of the Amur railway begun in 1908 settlements and cities were planned to be created along its way. The exhibition will probably be dedicated to Global Mind and the Humanity in a Universal Dialogue. Before to go and visit the interior of the Russian pavilion, or rather, the exhibition galleries of Russia, some words about the architect of the pavilion, which certainly deserves all our praise.

This is the famous Ivan Petrovich (pseudonym of Ivan Nikolaevich Petrov, 1845-1908). He was a renowned architect, certainly at the base of the Russian architectural revival. Moreover, this style was often called "Ropet style". Vladimir Vasilievich Stasov himself had said that his work was "the future of Russian architecture."

Ivan Ropet was raised in the family of his uncle and studied at the Imperial Academy of Arts under Alexey Gornostaeva, another pioneer of Russian revival.

With Viktor Hartmann, Ivan Ropet aspired to revive a national architectural style, mainly inspired by these traditional peasants houses in decorated wooden.

Now it's over with laughter. We arrive at the countries that have the future ahead of them. It's tiring as a child, a young cat or dog before the resignation of dressage.

But the horizontal folds of the scarf adds the line modern aerodynamic cars. It could be called the Elan Vital!

One of the most interesting buildingsof the Rue des Nations, but also one that has the most success withthe public and held long the visitor astonished is undoubtedly thepicturesque wooden facade of the Russian exhibition.

When it was decided to build a typicalfacade for this Russian section, the first country in Europe to haveanswered the call of France, the Emperor immediately appointed acommission and Mr. Boutowski as president.

The commission launched anarchitectural competition and three competitors were selected by thejudges. The first was Mr. Walberg, the second Mr. Ropet and the thirdMr. Dall.

When it was decide which of theseprojects would be the most interesting, it was realized that thefirst architect would be both more difficult and expensive toachieve. Finally, after some modifications adopted, the plan of thesecond architect Mr. Ropet, which was certainly the project's mostpicturesque and most beautiful effect, whose name is Terem in Russia,home of Prince.

On the ground floor is two bedrooms.One is occupied by two women living nature molded by Dr. Levittoux ofWarsaw. On the first floor are the apartments reserved for theGeneral Commissioner of Russian section, Baron Noleken.

Originally, it was anticipated thatthere would be two buildings with wooden staircase on each side ofthe central pavilion. But defects of ground forced the architect toremove one of these sides, which ultimately strengthened thepicturesque aspect of the whole.

The cuted ornaments, the jambs ofwindows and central tympanum round-shaped Byzantine are painted inbright colors. All was totally covered by roof in zincs shingle.

Now it was announced in early August that Yekaterinburg was chosen as the city that will compete with other world cities for the right to host the event.

We know that the works of the Russian pavilion for Expo 1900 are carried out by Russian workers in national costume.
These workers were welcomed from day one with great sympathy by the population of Paris.
We're going to see them working with affectionate curiosity. They were dressed in coats of color and wide trousers down in big boots.

They're hundred and live in tents. Until now, there was nothing had any complaints.
But in late July 1899, things started to go wrong: Mr. Delamarre was tasked to stop a Russian workers, StephanGoveloff, who was accused, it seems, have refused to work and excitement to the rebellion.
When the magistrate came to the site, he was not well received by all workers who were defending their friend that he had to leave.

As the lawyer didn't speak Russian and that the workers didn't understand French, it was difficult to explain. The police commissioner had to use force.

The next morning at five o'clock, the magistrate came again, but this time accompanied by a large number of policemen.

The scene of the day before was repeated but even more violent. The policemen, who have received various projectiles, including pots, took out their weapons to frighten them.
It was after a real battle that law enforcement could take Stephan Goveloff and two of his comrades.

As we have seen above, the Exhibition of 1878 was divided into several parts, the sites of Paris Champ de Mars and Trocadero:

Russia is thus represented in different places, but where it has the most beautiful window, where it has the best development was in the Palace of Champ de Mars.

Indeed, half of the main palace is devoted to foreign exhibitions, and the large gallery that contains all measuring 650 meters long and 85 meters wide.
Before visiting Russian participation in detail, one should already learn about this place quite exceptional!

This gallery has been divided in the lengthwise into eighteen strips or slices perpendicular to its axis, parallel to each other, but naturally of unequal size, according precisely the importance of each of the eighteen nations, between which the land valuable should be shared fairly.

In this way, the exposure of each nation has two entrances: one on the great gallery of foreign machinery, the other on the gallery open wich separate the foreign gallery to the central gallery of the Palace devoted to fine arts.

This street is: the "Rue des Nations".

We realize in reading these figures that Russia is in an upper middle with only four facades of larger size.
The reason for the difference in frontage is mainly due to the importance of trade and industry of each country. Remember that each facade is front of the exhibition gallery of each country. More we have products, more greater is the facade !

In order to give the Rue des Nations a picturesque character, the commission's expo had the idea of decorated the front of each country by a typical facade replicating its historic or moden architecture.

This idea was certainly very original, but the juxtaposition of these different architectures produced in some places a strange effect to the eye of the visitor surprised, especially with regard to nations that had very little width of frontage, as for Annam, Persia, Siam, Morocco, Tunisia... four nations on only 10 meters !

The Trocadéro Palace - Palais du Trocadéro

Then, one crosses the Seine from the Iena bridge, to discover the second great palace of the 1878 Expo.

Unlike the first to be dismantled after the event, the second palace that rises on the slopes of the Trocadéro hill to survive at the end of the expo. It must become a major embellishments of Paris and could be completed by 1 May, with great activity.

Produced by architects Davioud and Bourdais, the Trocadero Palace consists of a large central rotunda, with two towers on either side of 60 meters in height, style a bit exotic.

At right and left there's two long and elegant semicircular galleries interspersed with small houses and ended with two other more impressive.
The central dome covers an immense circular room 50 meters in diameter. This room, called the "Salle des Fêtes" can hold 4600 spectators and 400 musicians.
The room is shaped like an amphitheater with 40 meters of elevation. The decoration is very fine, but unfortunately, the acoustics was very bad.
The back of the room is occupied by an colossal organ 12 meters high, work of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll. This is the first concert organ.

The Palais du Trocadéro is preceded by a monumental waterfall sends water gushing in tanks prepared to receive them.
These basins are located in a pleasant park, with facilities requested by the work of more than 2000 workers.

The two large sections of the expo, Champ de Mars and Trocadero are communicated through a passage 24 meters wide built on top of the Iena's bridge.

The inauguration took place as planned on 1 May 1878. Maréchal Mac-Mahon, President of the Republic, was received by the Minister of Agriculture, prefect of the Seine, governor of Paris and the General Commissioner of the 1878 expo, Mr. Krantz. Then, they went to a salon to the left of the hall where the reception was held foreign princes and members of the diplomatic corps, and were given various speeches, before starting the expo visit.

Palace of the Champ de Mars – Paris 1878 World Expo

The use was taken from the first expositions, it required a large exhibition halls. Located on the Champ de Mars, this palace as a shape of a huge rectangle. It was designed by architect Leopold Hardy.

On the left is the French great gallery of machines, in the right, foreign machinery.
These two parallel galleries that form the long sides of the rectangle are similar. They measure 660 meters long and 35 meters wide. They're cut transversely by two vestibules of 310 meters long and 25 meters wide.

Section of Fine Arts occupies the central axis of the Palace, in the form of two galleries of 230 meters long and 25 meters wide ... with a height of 12.50 meters!

In the center of the building is a garden which have in its center the Palace of the City of Paris, which was an honor place.

Glass walls illuminate the galleries of this huge palace, the air is exchanged with 24 huge vents coming from the basement. 3000 cast-iron columns are distributed under the palace in order to support the floors. 1650 other columns support the roof, not to mention the 270 big iron pillars which are the main points of support of the building.

Leaning against the pillars of the great hall of the palace, near the Seine, are 20 monumental statues symbolizing foreign nations. This hall is preceded by a large terrace of 22 meters wide, which is accessed through seven porches.

This huge palace covers an area of 17.4 hectares (for a total area of 75 hectares of exposure).

A wide space is provided between the Seine and the Grand Palace. It received a beautiful park, shaded with lots of tree species. On the banks are the exhibitions of navigation, as in 1867 expo.

35 nations were formally involved. The presence of Germany will be informal, its government refused to participate.

Of the 16 official European participations, Russia and Finland are represented by 1202 participants.
The exhibition is mainly inside the palace of the Champ de Mars, but some national pavilions are located outside. National participation of Russia is located inside the palace, also in the adjoining buildings in the palace of the Trocadero (at the other side of the river Seine).

We will return later in detail on the palace of the Champ de Mars, and of course, the Russia's participation.

The exposition center is an assembly of components descending on sunbeams (or the Orenburg shawl threads) and embodying the region of Orenburg: salt crystals, a map of Orenburg City – surrounded by wheat field installations – a corn sea. Bread and salt together symbolize hospitality.
Welcome to the exposition of Orenburg region, a unique territory in Russia located between Europe and Asia.

At the beginning of the exposition you will cross a field of wheat. Orenburg region is the breadbasket of Russia; more than 3 million tons of grain are cultivated here. However, exploration of the region in the 16th century began from salina development, and agriculture appeared here much later.

In Russian culture, the bread with salt are symbol hospitality. There has been a tradition in Russia to welcome dear guests with a fresh-baked “karavai” (a round loaf of bread) with a saltcellar in the center. And nowadays, 12% of Russian salt is produced in Orenburg region.

The people inhabiting the region are famous for their hospitality. The Ural River flowing in the region separates two parts of the world – Europe and Asia, so plenty of cultures and nations are intertwined here.

The center of the exposition hosts a model of the Orenburg city that seems to be made of salt. The city buildings reflect traditions of both European and Asian architecture. They managed to avoid chaotic development due to the fact that the city was built according to the preliminarily approved plan with consideration of the local topography. The city buildings are located in a symmetrical way, as a single style solution.
The white threads holding the city model represent another symbol of the region, the Orenburg shawl, a hand-made shawl knitted not from wool but from goat fiber. These shawls are very light, thin and warm, and their patterns are ingenious.

The concept of representing Orenburg region is based on the traditional Russian “bread and salt” formula, and means the valuable things a person can share. The combination of bread and salt is a universal symbol: bread expresses wish of wellbeing and wealth, and salt protects from hostile forces and influence. Treating a guest with bread and salt helps to establish friendly terms and trust between the guest and the host.

Salt and the sun are tightly bound in mythology. Orenburg region shows this connection being one of the sunniest parts of Russia – with 300 sunny days per year. For centuries, salt has been literally worth its weight in gold and served as cash equivalent.

In the exposition, Orenburg region is represented as an open city made of transparent materials and lit by sunbeams. Crystals of salt are beaded on the sunbeams. The city surrounded by the stylized wheat fields looks like a karavai with salt offered to guests.

Orenburg region is multiethnicity and a mesh of cultures, the Russian gates to Asia. The region is different from many other regions of Russia by its cosmopolitanism. In this context, the true Russian hospitality gets special importance blurring out the cultural boundaries between different cultures. It is here where Russia and Orenburg region warmly welcome the peoples of Asia with bread and salt.

And the fine lines of intertwined cultures are reflected in another traditional symbol of the region, the Orenburg shawl.

This 1878 world expo in Paris find itsroots in the political situation at the time. It's the result of thecountry's recovery after the disasters of 1870 war and theentrenchment of republic institutions.

The President of the Republic, MaréchalMacMahon, who was appointed in 1874, wants to prove to all nationsthat the French republic is a government of peace and concord.

He wants to show the world that theRepublic has allowed France to regain its place as at the previousexhibition of 1867 in Paris, through his work and the strength of itsindustry.

On April 4, 1876 was decided that aworld expo of agricultural and industrial products would be held fromMay 1 to October 31, 1878.

April 13, public education also proposea world expo of Fine Arts.

The location choice of the expo wasdifficult and deliberated long. Different locations were proposed:Saint-Cloud, Vincennes, the Tuileries. It's ultimately the Champ deMars, as in 1867, which is held the April 21. The expo will alsoextend to the other side of the Seine, on the Trocadéro hill. Onehad planned to bring these two parts with a gigantic bridge.

On August 5, 1876, SenatorJean-Baptiste Krantz has been appointed General Commissioner. He'smember of the Commission for international expos. This commission wascreated in 1870 at the opening of the Exhibition of Fine Arts inLondon.

19/09/2011 - A coordination meeting for candidates for an International Exhibition in 2017 and a World Exhibition in 2020, also known as a Gentlemen's Agreement meeting, took place at the BIE offices on Wednesday, September 14.
The representatives of candidate countries met to discuss in a friendly and constructive atmosphere the various issued related to their candidature and coordinate the activities carried out as part of the candidature campaign.

One of the main items on the agenda was the preparation for the 150th session of the BIE General Assembly (November 22 – 23), when candidates will have the opportunity to present their projects to the representatives of the 157 Member States of the BIE.

Furthermore, to communicate and develop the theme, candidates will host international symposiums where experts and relevant personalities in the field will be invited to present and debate around the proposed theme.

Now, the visit of several buildings of this little russian village at the Champ de Mars.

A - Isbah group... The great Isbah, or peasant's house, consists of three buildings grouped.

The first is a building in spruce, which forms a house complete. The walls are made of tree bark and regularized round without an ax. The underside of each piece of wood is hollowed out so as to receive the top of the lower part, between the two is in tow.
This is obviously a pretty amazing style building for visitors of expo.

These Russian buildings are certainly at the origin of the mode of wooden chalet in France until the early twentieth century.

Isbah ground floor.

The ground floor is designed for barns and stables.
Accessible by a staircase covered, the first floor is divided into two parts which include housing of the peasant and his children. A terracotta stove is at a corner of the room, it serves as a bread oven and stove. The walls are lined with painted wooden boards.
Visitors can discover everyday objects and handicrafts, furs, fabrics and embroideries, ceramics Caucasus and valuable icons.

Isbah first floor.

Attached to this building is a covered courtyard which is used to store the carts of the farm. Note that they are very well made and finely decorated.

To end the visit to the farm, a small house without floor, annex made in white fir, assembled with same way as the main building. It's a kind of gardes pavilion, preceded by a portico. Very little furniture in this building, here presents the products of hunting, fishing and agriculture. Visitors discover the dried fish, unknown in France, its consumption is important in Russia, the meat is forbidden by the Orthodox Church during periods of fasting.

These buildings have all in common their assemblies no nails or ankle.

This set of Isbah is a special expo, led by Mr. Gromoff, one of the largest timber merchants in St. Petersburg.

B - Stables and mail... Front of, we find a long building of 76 meters by 7, with pavilions at each end and a front building in the middle. These are the stables and the post office, whose plans have been made by Mr. Banard, French architect.

There are twenty-four horses at all. Originating mainly from Ukraine, ten horses of varied races, fourteen luxuries horse. For that expo visitors could admire in best conditions, they are placed in longitudinal profile in ornate boxes.

Exhibitions were held regularly. Imperial stud horses were mounted by Russian officers. These demonstrations were highly appreciated by an audience of connoisseurs.

At both ends and center, the first floor is housing for six moujiks.

This building is also well decorated, mostly with carved wood in the style of center Russian hospodars, but adapted to a modern building, modern in 1867!

C - Sheds... In line with the stables is a large shed 30 meters on 5, in Russian style. On the ground floor are exposed farm machinery. On the first floor is an information desk, a fodder shop and an housing for six moujiks. (see photo above)

D - Office... Opposite is the counter, Russian administration office.

It's a highly decorated wooden pavilion in the style of northern Russia boyars. All mechanism of construction are also apparent. The chimney is in terracotta, with a pot underneath which pierced at the bottom.

E-Wells are present on the plan, but pictures don't show us them.

F - A tent attracts care of visitors, this is one of Ouarassa Yakut nomads, covered with bark for which we have no more precise description.

H – Yurt... Tent of 6 meters diameter, shaped like a beehive of felting stitching. At the top, a space is provided to allow some light to pass, as well as air and smoke. It is presented to the expo as the national home of the Cossacks and Tartars nomads.

The originality of the yurt was well appreciate by parisian visitors.

Fun little detail, there's in this Russian space a starlings pole and a pole indicating the distance from St. Petersburg to Paris.

The exhibition "Regions of the Russian Federation" is the Russian cities in all their territorial, national and cultural diversity. The exhibition reflects the ideas of transformation of urban communities, capabilities of Russian cities, and relations between them and the nearest territories. What is most important is the address of the Russian Federation's regions to the global community, willingness to renovate and change the appearance of Russian cities, introduce new quality standards of urban environment, hi-tech innovative projects with emphasis on the implementation benefits.

The exhibition combines ideas of cultural heritage, economical, innovative and technological development of the regions i.e. everything that may contribute to solving the most essential issues of a country with such a vast territory as Russia's, present the vision of how the use of new technologies and implementation of trailblazing projects may influence the qualitative change of urban environment and future life of the people.

The various buildings of the Russian Park at the World Expo...

After going through the Russian galleries of the palace of Champ de Mars, and found its various products, expertise and wealth, it's time to go out and find a more typical Russia .
Indeed, the great innovation of the 1867 World Expo in Paris is undoubtedly the appearance of the many pavilions, they represent a country or private company.

The central Palace is surrounded a lot of pavilions in the park.

It's a kind of open window, which makes the charm of the park surrounding the main palace, for the duration of the expo.
Moreover, after the closing of the pavilions, it was possible to walk in the evening. The architectural contrast was at every street corner, the change of scenery was the most complete.

Countries had chosen to present a pavilion, often inspired by local architecture, drawn from its far history or more early. Other countries chose to make a group of several very different constructions.

Russia had made this choice and its section occupied an area of about 1000 m², situated in the square between the palace and the Paris Rue de Suffren.

As you know, the russian's pavilion of Expo 1958 held in Brussels was very famous. Certainly one of the most interesting of history so far.
There's of course many reasons for it, in first the architecture of the pavilion itself, also exhibitions in the pavilion. It was the period of the the first steps of the space conquest, with Spoutniks...
and of course, the international politic situation.

We found a very interesting photo, not with the best quality, but quietly interesting, and a little bit funny.

It comes from a Lestrade Stereo Viewer, sold during the Expo 58.

Or how to bring about a fairy tale ?

As I announced a few days ago, we'll talk about one of the most famous Russian pavilion, which participated in the largest World Expo ever.

You remember, that was yesterday, that was last year in China, Shanghai Expo 2010.

Already, a few words about Shanghai Expo.
Shanghai is a cosmopolitan city, with one of the most spectacular economic growth of our times. With this fact, it was natural that the theme chosen for this expo was "Better City, Better Life".

Like all current expos, the event has its logo, it represents the Chinese character "Pinyin" modified to represent three persons united with the date 2010.

The mascot Haibao is shaped as the character "ren" which means "human being" or "humanity."

Located in downtown Shanghai on each bank of the Huangpu River, the expo has an area of 5.28 km ². Almost 200 countries were represented. The 64 millions visitors of Osaka Expo'70 has been exceeded with more of 70 millions visitors.

The Russian pavilion is located in Zone C, the largest Expo area, which has the most pavilions. Russiahas one of the most important building with 6000 m². It's also one of the largest number of visitors it received during the period of the Expo between May 1 and October 31, 2010.

The famous Soviet writer for children, Nikolay Nosov said that best cities would be ones of children. This is the City of Flowers described in the book "Adventures of Dunno and his friends" that inspired the design of the Russian pavilion designed as a city ideal and magical, a kind of paradise for children.

The building consists of 12 irregularly shaped towers with at the center a the "Civilization Cube" 15-meter high tower that connects them.

These towers, of 20 meters high in a circle which suggests a Russian dance training, or flower petals. They are perforated at the top, these shapes recalling traditional clothing of Russian women, different ethnic groups of the country.

These white, red and gold towers also recall those of the former cities of the Urals there are over 3000 years, but modernized.

The curator of the Russian exhibition, Mr. Strachko said they had also showed the diversity of ancient and modern cities.

All visitors to the Shanghai Expo and the Russian pavilion agree on the fact that's one of the greatest achievements of the Expo 2010.

As we have learned in the first section on Russian participation in World Expo 1867 in Paris, this country was represented in two main areas of exposure. In first as a small village or small group of constructions, and in the huge Palais du Champ de Mars.
This is where we'll start our visit.

Russian section - Gate of Russia.

The expo visitor is primarily to a summary of Russia. Indeed, on a very small space, he finds himself to discover the wealth of products and a huge country, without tired.

The Soviet pavilion was on the Ile Notre-Dame, at the opposite of the American pavilion, which was on the other side of the bridge, on the Ile Sainte-Helene.

Russia at the Paris 1867 World Expo - Part 1

In 1863, during the awards to the exhibitors after the exhibition in London in 1862, and their encouragements, Prince Napoleon (cousin of the emperor) expresses the wish to see a second Expo in Paris in 1867 (the first World Expo in France was in 1855). At this time, we are indeed in the midst of industrial emulation.

Champ-de-Mars and Palace.

Unlike in 1855 when the exhibition was held between the Seine and the Champs Elysees, the exhibition of 1867 is mainly located on the Champ-de-Mars.

Frédéric Le Play, who was the Commissioner General of France in the 1862 London Expo was appointed Commissioner General of Expo 1867.

A major concern outside the site selection is the classification of what is exposed. The experiment was made in London where the works and the products were distributed very confused.

It was therefore decided that the palace would not have a second floor that would include a double classification by category of similar products, and by nationalities.

The result is the construction of a huge palace of elliptical shape of 482 meters in length, 370 meters wide, directed by the engineer Jean-Baptiste Krantz and architect Leopold Hardy.

On masonry bases, the gigantic building is mainly in iron with concentric galleries. On the outside is the Gallery of Machines, including the construction was entrusted to a young entrepreneur who has one of his first hits, Gustave Eiffel.

In the Palace of the foreign section located at the Invalides, the Russian section presents the gift from the Emperor to the French Government: a map of France measuring over one meter in hand, executed by the imperial lapidary Ekatherinenbourg.

It is a mosaic of precious stones from the Urals, embedded in a slate-colored jasper.

The sea is shown in light gray marble and departments are in different shades of jasper. The cities listed on the card is 106 and the number of gems used to mark them are mounted in gold.
The rivers that crisscross the map are of platinum.
Paris is represented by a diamond, a sapphire Rouen, Marseille by an emerald, tourmaline by Lyon, Bordeaux by an aquamarine, Nice by hyacinth, Cherbourg by Alexandrite (green and reddish-blue day in the evening), Lille by phénocithe, Reims by beryl, beryl Nantes by, etc..
The names of cities and rivers are écirts pure gold.

The weight of the card is 352 kg.
This imperial gift is not worth less than 4 million (CHF in 1900) and cost three years of work.

This bridge with the span of its wonderful arch

From century to century, uniting the peoples.

These verses of J.-M. de Heredia which were read by Paul Mounet at the laying of the foundation stone of the Alexander III bridge on 7 October 1896, in the presence of the Czar Nicholas II and President Felix Faure, remind us that this
famous bridge was connected with the Franco-Russian Alliance and with the Great Exhibition of 1900. Its name was given in 1896, and the nine coat of arms on it represented the different historical provinces of Russia.

The idea of joining the Champs Elysees to the Esplanade des Invalides dates from the early part of the last century.

During the Restoration a chain bridge was built so as to continue the central avenue of the Invalides, but an accident and several protests from the City Council caused it to be broken up in 1828, before it had so much as been made use of.

This unfortunate beginning showed them that, if they wished to build a bridge at this spot, it ought to be made :
1. So as not to hide the view of the Invalides seen from the Champs Elysees.
2. So as not to obstruct the view of the Seine seen from the Concorde bridge.

On the other hand the bridge must not be constructed on piles since the bend at this spot would make it difficult for river craft to pass.

Such were the considerations which are responsible for the present shape of the bridge, with its single low lying arch spanning 107 meters.

It was built after the plans of the engineer Jean Resal and Amédée Alby, and its decoration was the work of several architects, Cassien-Bernard and Gaston Cousin. The construction lasted from 1896 to 1900.

Two monumental columns decorate the two extremities, and are carved with the allegorical statues of women representing the different epochs of French history: the Feudal Times, Louis XIV, the Revolution, Modern Times. The columns are each surmounted with the statue of a Herald holding a golden Pegasus, the work
of Fremiet, Coutan and Marqueste.

This bridge which was inaugurated on the opening of the Universal Exhibition on April 14th 1900, was considered to have been a daring masterpiece.

Its decoration however gave rise, at the time to a good deal of discussion. The emblems and coat of arms on the columns and the figures on the chandeliers caused some curious controversies.

It was said that the artist had made mistakes, that he had hung the Cross of the Order of the Holy Spirit to the Collar of St Michael, and that he had no real tradition to sanction his taking cock as a symbol of France.

To day these details are overlooked. and hardly prevent us admiring. this fine bridge joins two of the most Imposing parts of Paris and adds an architectural beauty to the stylish embankments of the Seine.

Vladimir Putin has created a commission "Expo 2020". It will consist of politicians, businessmen and public figures. The Governor of the Middle Urals, Mr. Misharin is also part of this commission.

The decision of Russian authorities to put forward the candidacy of Ekaterinburg, as a site able to receive the Expo 2020 was announced on August 2.
